South Korea's 5G auction is officially launched. Who will be the future national high-speed wireless network? The answer may be revealed in the competition between KT and LGU+.

The Ministry of Science and ICT will auction 280MHz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band and 2400MHz of spectrum in the 28GHz band at a price of 3.3 trillion won ($3.04 billion).

Operators are very interested in the 3.5GHz band. The 280MHz bandwidth will be divided into 28 10MHz spectrum blocks for sale, but each operator can only get at most 100MHz of the 3.5GHz band spectrum. SK Telecom plans to take full 100MHz of spectrum, and the remaining 180MHz will be competed by KT and LGU+.

South Korea has completed an auction of 5G spectrum on Monday, and plans to start deployment by the end of this year.

In this auction, the 3.5GHz spectrum with a bandwidth of 280MHz and the 28GHz spectrum with a bandwidth of 2400MHz are divided into 28 blocks and 24 blocks respectively, and the three major telecom companies SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have obtained 10 blocks of each spectrum.

SK Telecom and KT each received 100MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum, LG Uplus received 80MHz of spectrum, and the three telecom companies all received 800MHz of 2.8GHz spectrum resources. The auction price was as high as 3.6183 trillion won.

South Korea's Ministry of Science, Technology and ICT said the spectrum, which will be activated on December 1, will be available for 10 years for the 3.5GHz spectrum and five years for the 28GHz spectrum.

Keysight Technologies recently revealed that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea Telecom to jointly develop 5G New Radio (NR) technology and evolved 4G technology to accelerate the commercial deployment of 5G.

The signing of the MoU shows that the two parties will deepen cooperation in the development of 5G NR and evolved 4G technology, and drive KT's 5G trial and commercial deployment process. Keysight will share its experience in 5G NR technology development, 5G infrastructure testing, and user equipment testing in the Sub-6GHz and mmWave bands. Keysight will support the development of over-the-air (OTA) and mmWave beamforming calibration test methods that KT will use to develop related test procedures.

The two parties will work together to accelerate the evolution of 5G NR test and measurement solutions, including earlier 5G network and user equipment emulation solutions, including early R&D testing in the ecosystem, as well as device and network validation and performance testing during actual deployment. KT will also use Keysight's 5G NR software solutions throughout the product design cycle to gain the many benefits of its advanced capabilities such as simulation, signal generation and analysis. In addition, Keysight's solution for Evolved 4G configurations offers features such as multi-band, multi-carrier aggregation, and higher-order MIMO, which can help KT make the transition from 4G to 5G signal jammers smoother.

Jeon Hongbeam, Executive Vice President, Infrastructure Lab, Korea Telecom Convergence Technology Research Institute, said: "We are delighted to be working with Keysight as its leading 5G test and measurement expertise and solutions enable us to be more efficient, More reliable implementation of commercial deployment scenarios.”
