The threat of terrorist drones

Most hobbyists consider their drone to be a great tool - much less dangerous than a hammer and a lot more fun.

But there are times when we wonder about the drone's dark potential. What could he be doing in the wrong hands? For the sake of citizenship, most drone users are unlikely to share these thoughts in public.

Well, don't hesitate to get away because the United States Army Association has expressed your worst fears.

In a new report, he suggests that the increasing use of drones for dusting crops shows that they can also provide chemical or biological warfare agents (CBWs). In addition, the software that allows multiple drones to multiply and coordinate with each other is likely to encourage the proliferation of these poisons.

Jokes or mock assassinations?

Lt. Col. Claude A. Lambert, strategic planner with the US Army Materiel Command, points out some disturbing events where drones could have wreaked havoc:

Drone harmlessly crashed near German Chancellor Angela Merkel during rally in 2013
Authorities discovered a drone possibly contaminated with radioactive cesium on the roof of the Japanese prime minister's office in 2015

I'll add a more recent one: A drone caused a seven-minute hiatus during a Chicago Cubs game last month when it landed on Wrigley Field.
In your opinion, these are either jolly japes or mock assassinations. The military must take the darkest view of human nature. Lieutenant-Colonel Lambert therefore calls for a US national strategy to detect and identify drone threats. There are no easy solutions, however.

"There is no quick fix to countering a ... threat," he wrote. “No single comprehensive hardware solution will completely eliminate the (drone) problem. Kinetic methods, signal hijacking, radio frequency interference, and directed energy are areas that can be explored to defeat (drones) in a practical and cost-effective manner. "

He says that in July 2019, the US Marine Corps successfully used a new portable drone jammer to jam an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz. But he was a soldier on high alert in a conflict zone. Nationally, the FAA registers approximately 1,700,000 drones in the United States. No one knows how many unregistered people. Lieutenant-Colonel Lambert believes that the military and law enforcement must work closely with science and industry to counter the threat of deadly drones.

Prevent the arming of drones

He also wants the international community to stop the trafficking of chemicals that could turn drones into weapons.

Lt. Col. Lambert points out another potential weakness in the drone defense shield. The US military has minimized its chemical and biological training in recent wars because its adversaries did not have these weapons.

“As a result, the joint force is now ill-prepared to face a threat of chemical or biological warfare,” he wrote.

"One thing is for sure: anyone who wants to develop or acquire a CBW agent and deliver it via a (drone) probably cannot be deterred."
